ROBERTO MARONI

President of Lombardy Region, Italy

Born in Varese, Italy, on 15 March 1955. Married with three children. Resident in Varese. Graduated in law. Lawyer. He headed a legal office at a US multinational. In his free time he plays Hammond organ in Soul group Distretto 51.

 

A member of the Lega Nord party, Mr Maroni joined the Lega Lombarda party when it was first founded and he became a political activist in 1979. After becoming Provincial Secretary of the Lega Nord in Varese and a member of the Lega Lombarda National Council, in 1990 he was elected to the municipal council in Varese, before becoming a Councillor in the city’s first Lega-led administration.

 

He was elected to parliament as an MP in 1992. He became Chairman of the Lega Nord Chamber of Deputies’ Parliamentary Group in 1993.

The following year he joined the first Berlusconi administration as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior.

 

He was returned to the lower House of Parliament in 1996 with the Lega Nord Padania Group. He sat on the First Standing Committee (Constitutional Affairs), the Third Standing Committee (Foreign and Community Affairs), and the Permission to Prosecute Committee.

 

In 2001, after once more being returned to Parliament, he served as Minister of Labour and Social Policy (Welfare) under the Second and Third Berlusconi Administrations. As part of his mandate, following concerted discussions with the social partners he pushed through a root and branch reform of Labour law (known as the Biagi Act) targeted at making Italy’s labour market more flexible and inclusive. He also enacted major pension reforms to promote private supplementary pensions.

 

In 2006, he was elected Chairman of the Chamber of Deputies’ Lega Nord Padania Group; he became a  member  of  the  Parliamentary  Committee  for  Security  of  the  Republic,  the Parliamentary Delegation to the Council of Europe Assembly, and the Parliamentary Delegation to the Assembly of the Western European Union.

 

In 2008, he was re-elected to the Chamber with the Lega Nord Padania. Under the fourth Berlusconi administration he served as Minister for Internal Affairs. During this mandate he acted robustly against organized crime, achieving significant results, particularly in the claw-back of Mafia assets.

 

On 1 July 2012, he was elected Federal Secretary of the “Lega Nord per l’Indipendenza della Padania” Confederal Political Movement. Polling 43% of votes cast, he was elected President of the Lombardy region in elections held on 25/26 February 2013.
