President nd CEO, South Carolina Manufacturers Alliance (SCMA)

Lewis Gossett is President & CEO of the South Carolina Manufacturers Alliance, the only statewide organization dedicated solely to the interests of manufacturers. He became the youngest Cabinet member in State history when he served as South Carolina’s Secretary of Labor in Governor David Beasley’s administration from 1995-1999, and he was a shareholder at the Ogletree Deakins law firm prior to joining the SCMA in 2003.

While at Furman University where he received a Bachelors of Arts degree, Lewis was awarded the prestigious Harry S. Truman Scholarship in 1985. He also received a Juris Doctorate degree from the University of Georgia in 1990.

Under Lewis’s leadership, the SCMA has doubled in size, adding numerous additional member services and events, including the South Carolina Automotive Council which annually hosts one of the Southeast’s largest automotive industry meetings.

In response to the challenge of meeting members’ workforce needs, SCMA recently created a groundbreaking public-private effort, South Carolina Future Makers, to encourage young people to pursue careers in manufacturing and information technology. Powered by STEM Premier, this effort will increase the skilled workforce pipeline entering advanced manufacturing and technical-related areas. Through partnerships with South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley and every major public workforce agency in the State, the Future Makers initiative is reaching young persons, parents, and educators to inform those audiences of the opportunities and proper education pathways for manufacturing careers.
