Executive Vice President and Senior Advisor, Samsung Electronics

Dr. Ji Oh Song is Executive Vice President and Senior Advisor at Samsung Electronics. He has begun serving as the head of WorldSkills Samsung since 2007, an initiative to motivate and encourage young people to learn skills. He had been the general manager of Mechatronics & Manufacturing Technology Center, Samsung Electronics from 2001 to 2007. In this capacity he was responsible for the research and development of advanced manufacturing technology, including factory automation, innovative equipment, and manufacturing software.
His professional career began at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft, United Technologies Corp. in 1979 as a senior engineer. Then he joined General Motors Research Laboratories in 1983 conducting extensive research works in the structural and system optimization. After that, he moved to the midsize and luxury car division of General Motors in 1986 to become the manager of vehicle structure and system optimization. He had led car development from 1996 to 2000 as a head of Samsung Motors Technical Center.
Ji Oh Song served as the chairman of CAD/CAM Society, the vice chairman of the Institute of Control, Automation and Systems Engineers, Korea, vice chairman of the Korean Society of Mechanical Engineers, and Head of Delegation for the international Intelligent Manufacturing Systems program. He graduated from Seoul National University with a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in mechanical engineering. He also received a master’s degree in applied mechanics and a Ph.D. degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Iowa, U.S.A.
