Herbert von Bose completed his studies in law from the universities Bonn, Geneva and Heidelberg in 1975. He was assistant at the law faculty of the University of Montpellier before joining the Ministry of Justice in Baden Würtemberg , Germany in 1976.


From 1979 to1983 he practiced as a lawyer in Mannheim and Heidelberg. In 1983, he started working for the European Commission in Brussels. Up to 1995 he worked in different Directorates General: Social affairs, Energy and Enterprise.


In 1996 he joined the Directorate General for Research and became Head of Unit for”Aeronautics, Space, Automotive, Rail and Maritime”.

From 2004 to 2007, he was Head of Unit for “Security Research and Development”.From September 2007 to December 2013, he was Director for” Industrial Technologies”in DG Research and Innovation.
