Dong Kim is head of Institute for the 4th Industrial Revolution and Chair Professor of UNIST in Korea. He is responsible for developing R&D projects and ensuring technology transfer to the industry.
Previously, he served as CTO of SK Innovation (SKI), the largest oil and petrochemical company in Korea. SKI is a global energy company with annual revenue in excess of $60 Billion US dollars. During his tenure, he led development and execution of technology road map and brought a technical competitive edge to the existing manufacturing facilities. He also introduced the Research and Business Development + Engineering (R&BD+E) program to accelerate R&D output to business success.
Prior to joining SKI, Dong Kim worked for Royal Dutch Shell for 19 years in various positions including research engineer, team leader, technical advisor, and regional manager, where he developed his technical and leadership skills. He has served as chairman of numerous technical organizations, including Frontier Energy Resources Symposium committee, the Korean-American Offshore Engineers Association (KOEA), and two American Petroleum Institute (API) sub-committees. He has also served as a member of international societies such as American Society of Mechanical Engineers Fitness For Service (ASME-FFS) Code Committee, OECD Corporate Governance for Process Safety, and Technical Committee of The Federation of Korean Industries.
Professor Kim earned his BS and MS from Seoul National University and Ph. D from Engineering College of the Ohio State University in 1989.
